Lifelong learning in different value-based views

Key question: What are the values, ideas, beliefs, life-patterns, views of the world, notions of human missions rights and duties behind different answers to the following questions/positions ?

Lifelong learning for the sake of whom ?

What can be valuation patterns for giving priorities to:

  • the improvement of socialisation and better adaption to the community ?
  • a broader knowledge-background for the progress of democracy ?
  • the rising of underdevelopped countries, regions, communities, professional areas, systems, branches, institutions etc ?
  • the improvement of economic positions in the global market ?
  • the personal development of the individual learners ?

Who shall be the main participants ?

What principle positions can be behind decisions to mainly support the lifelong learning of

  • leading persons who are already well educated and open to continous learning ?
  • those who especially need it in a common interest because of their high responsibilities ?
  • those who never attended organised continuing education courses ?
  • everybody ? ("Lifelong learning for all")

What shall be the main aims of lifelong learning ?

What can be principle patterns for giving priorities to:

  • more personal or more social purposes ?
  • making people happier, more satisfied, more self-confident, more independant or
  • making individuals fit for the struggle of life - in competition against others ?
  • the development of hidden potentials of mankind in dangerous challenging global transformation processes ?
  • giving equal learning chances to everybody and overcoming social exclusion?

How shall lifelong learning be implemented ?

What can be valuation patterns for priorities to:

  • a lifelong organised learning ?
  • the integration of informal learning ?
  • the acknowledgement/assessment of prior experiential learning ?
  • more guided or more self-directed learning, more freedom or more control ?
  • more individualised learning or more learning in groups ?
  • more face-to-face contacts or more virtual communication ?
  • more tutor/teacher based or more computer based learning ?
  • more public or more private support systems ?
  • more development of international learning networks ?
  • a fundamental change of the roles and functions of teachers to coaching, advice, facilitating ?
  • a definite change of the role and functions of continuing education institutions to become
