Mr Gregory Wurzburg (b 1948 New York City)
BA in English Literature from Georgetown University, MPh in Public Policy
Analysis, George Washington University. Principal Administrator in the
Directorate for Education, Employment, Labour and Social Affairs at the
OECD. Responsible for OECD work on industry training, adult learning,
and the finance of adult learning. Author and co-author of publications
on finance of lifelong learning, educational attainment of adults, industry
training and learning for adults.
Ms Heidi Hautala (b 1955 in Oulu, Finland)
Member of the Bureau of the Green Group of the European Parliament, MEP
since 1995. Education: Master of Science in Agriculture and Forestry 1988.
Organisational activity: Member of the Board in the Committee of 100 Finland
in 1992-1993; Deputy Member of the Board and Member of the Cultural Committee

Mr Arne Carlsen, (b 1953 Denmark)
MA in Philosophy, BA in French, currently researcher at The Danish National
Institute for Educational Research. Been as a teacher in many different
liberal adult education organisations, been as a university-teacher in
Philosophy, and was 1995-1999 director of the Nordic Folk Academy, the
Nordic Council of Ministers research and training institution for adult
continuing education within the Nordic countries, between the Nordic
countries and the Adjacent areas, and between the Nordic countries and
the rest of Europe. Founder of the NFA international Centre for Adult
Education and the journal "Baltic Sea Dialogue". Involved in tasks for
The European Association for the Education of Adults, The European Commission,
UNESCO and served as an evaluator of adult education performance at European
and international level.
Mr István Vadász (b 1953)
Degree (teacher of History and Geography) from University of Deprecen.
Currently president of a country folk high school foundation and teacher
of a folk high school. Focus on scientific field: distribution of new
voluntary associations in settlements of Hungary and adult educational
initiatives of folk high schools in Hungary.
Ms Susanna Huovinen (b 1972)
Master of Social Sciences (University of Jyväskylä 1998), Member
of Parliament. Member of the National Sports Council, Member of the City
Council of Jyväskylä, Deputy Chairperson of the social-democratic
party group. Chairperson of the Youth Committee of the Finnish Workers'
Sports Federation. Liaison secretary of the youth campaign of the Finnish
Youth Co-operation Allianssi in 1996, organisation instructor in Nuoret
Kotkat youth organisation in 1991-1993, and sports instructor in
an adult education centre for several years.
Mr Paul Bélanger
Director of the UNESCO Institute for Education since 1989. Until 1984
the General Director of the Canadian Institute for Adult Education in
French-speaking Canada. Before taking present responsibility at UNESCO
he was the Director of an Institute of applied research on work in Canada
and the Chairperson of a public commission for the evaluation of junior
colleges. After a Master in Philosophy at the University' of Ottawa, a
Master in Social Science at the University of Montreal and a postgraduate
study in Adult Education at Manchester University in United Kingdom, he
completed a Ph.D. at the Sorbonne in Paris. Received an Honorary' Degree
of Doctor of the University of Surrey in December 1998. The author of
many studies on adult education in Canada, in Africa and at the international
level.

of Education. Director of Adult Education and Training, Ministry of Education;
Department for Education and Science Policy.
Mr Ismo Silvo (b 1958)
MA in philosophy and political sciences (Univ. Helsinki) 1981, PhD in
Political Sciences, Media Policy (Univ. Helsinki) 1988. Publication activites
in the field of audience research, cultural media studies, and media policy.
A number of presentation on both national and international conferences
related to these topics. Lecturing in the Univ. of Helsinki on political
sciences and media studies since 1983. Audience researcher at the Finnish
Broadcasting Company 1982-85. Expert in strategic planning of the YLE

in organisational sciences, PhD – pedagogical sciences. Directress of
the Slovenian Institute for Adult Education, assistant lecturer at the
University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Arts, Department of Educational Sciences.
Research projects on conception of adult education, assessing the needs
for adult education. Secretary general of International League for Social
Commitment in Adult Education, member of the Steering Committee of the
European Society for the Research in the Education of Adults, member of
the Executive Board of European Association of Adult Educators, member
of the Governing Board of the UNESCO Institute for Education, Hamburg.
Ms Aleksandra Arceusz (b 1960 Gdansk, Poland)
MA degree in modern British literature in 1985 from the Gdansk University.
English teacher in secondary school and at the university for 8 years.
In 1991 became a director of the Teacher Training College in Elbag, Poland.
Responsible over the organisation and administration of the programme
and for teaching English language methodology. In 1998 the Teacher Training
College was changed into the fully independent educational institution
and it became a part of The Higher School of Vocational Training. The
Institute is responsible for educating teachers of foreign languages and
also for offering language courses for the community.
Mr Eric Rousselle
Lic.Phil. Development Manager at the University of Oulu Learning and
Research Services since 1991. Language teacher at the university of Oulu
language Centre and in several Finnish Folk High Schools (1985 - 1991).
Expertise: Development of Web-based learning environments for continuing
education. The TELSIpro -Web-based environment developed by the University
of Oulu is used in several European adult education projects and teacher
networks. Development of Web-based language simulations for professional
training. Lectures on educational technology related subjects in several
Finnish teacher training programs and international conferences. Project
Management of several national and European Innovation and teacher training
projects.
Ms Anneli Bauters (b 1945)
MA Degree from the University of Helsinki. Secretary General at the Green
Cultural and Educational Centre. Interested in didactics and has been
working in the 80´s in the field of training language teachers in adult
education. Special interest is to write study material for adults learning
the Swedish language. The Finnish publishing houses WSOY and Otava has
published about 20 language textbooks from their team. The textbooks are
aimed at both liberal adult education and vocational education.
Mr Erich Mistrik (b 1954)
Graduated from Faculty of Arts, Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovakia
in aesthetics and philosophy in 1978. Degrees: CSc. in aesthetics (equivalent
to PhD) 1989, Associate Professor in Aesthetic Education in 1994. Present
position: Head of the Department of Ethic and Civic Education, Faculty
of Education, Comenius University, Bratislava since 1990 and Vice-Dean
for International Relations of the Faculty of Education from 1996. Professional
interests: civic education, aesthetic education, multicultural education,
and methodology of the humanities.
Ms Marketta Luutonen (b 1950)
Ph.D. Lic. Soc. Sc. Managing Director, The Finnish Crafts Organisation
Mr Timo Toiviainen (b 1942)
Dr. Timo Toiviainen received BA and MA from the University of Jyväskylä,
Finland. Later earned Ed.D. at the University of Toronto, Canada. From
1967 has had different positions in adult education organisations, and
has been Secretary General in the Finnish Adult Education Association
since 1987. Dr. Toiviainen has also been a Docent on the faculty at the
University of Helsinki from 1998. Published extensively especially on
liberal adult education.
Mr Günther Dohmen (b 1926)
Studied Germanistik, History, English Literature, Philosophy and Education
at the university of Heidelberg. Got his Ph.D. from Heidelberg University,
an honorary doctor of the British Open University and the 'Habilitation"
(university teaching licence) from the university of Tübingen.
Main points of professional career were: 5 years teacher at secondary
schools, founder of the first "Free School" in Germany, 6 years lecturer
and since 1963 tenureship-professor for educational sciences, 1980-94
professor of adult and continuing education at the University of Tübingen.
Since 1988 chairman of the German Concerted Action Continuing Education
(KAW), the umbrella forum for all institutions and representatives of
continuing education in Germany, and since 1995 works as scientific adviser
for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Bonn.
Mr Kari Kinnunen (b 1945)
M.Pol.Sc. Principal of the Workers´ Academy. Board member of the Finnish
Association of Folk High Schools and Board Chairman of the Humanistic
Polytechnic.
Mr Alan Tuckett
Director of the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education
for England and Wales since 1988. Originator of Adult Learners' Week and
co-ordinates it each year. Studied English and American Literature at
the University of East Anglia. In 1993 a visiting professor at the University
of Warwick and a visiting fellow at the University of Technology, Sydney.
Special Professor in Continuing Education at the university of Nottingham.
In 1999 was awarded a D Univ. (Doctor of the University) by the Open University.
President of the International League for Social Commitment in Adult Education
from 1986 to 1987, and has advised UNESCO and the Palestine National Authority
on adult learning. He was awarded the OBE in 1995 and in 1997 was appointed
vice-chair of the National Advisory Group for Continuing Education and
Lifelong Learning.
Ms Magda Trantallidi-Papadimitriou (b 1952 Athens, Greece)
Has a background of a lawyer turned educationist with studies of Law
at the University of Athens, Political Science at the University
of Paris VIII, and Adult education at the University of Florence. Head
of the Department for International Co-operation in the General Secretariat
for Adult Education of the Greek Ministry of Education. Responsible for
ESF policies and collaborates with UNESCO/UIE and OECD. Member of the
ad hoc committee in Brussels for the European Year of Lifelong Learning
1996. Evaluator of the LEONARDO I programme at both national and transnational
levels. Associate member of the European Association for the Education
of Adults. Actively involved in European citizenship issues.
Mr Jack O'Herlihy
MA, Head of Development at Letterkenny Institute of Technology in Donegal,
Ireland. Has extensive experience of local economic development at national
and European level over many years. Has a particular interest in the role,
which Higher Education must play as a motor for economic development.
An academic centre of excellence cannot exist as an island but must be
a productive centre for technology transfer to strengthen the economy
of the region it serves. Has a special interest in the use of new technologies,
particularly ICT, for rural development.
Mr Peter Krug (b 1943, Bremen)
Diploma in Social Sciences and Educational Sciences in Göttingen
and Cornell/USA. Since 1992 Head of Division for Further and Adult education
and Pedagogical Services, Ministry of Education, Science and Further Education
Rhineland-Platinate. Since 1995 chairman of the Commission for further
and Adult Education of Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education
and Cultural affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany,
Bonn. Author for numerous publications in the field of lifelong learning.
Ms Carina Abréu Fardby (b 1958)
Sociologist. Director at the Nordic folk academy.
Mr Ruud Veldhuis (b 1944)
Graduated as a political scientist, specialised in international relations,
sociology, history and mass psychology. Been as a teacher of history and
social studies in secondary schools. From 1981 until 1994 worked as lecturer
and deputy-director at the Stichting Burgerschapskunde (The Citizenship
Foundation) in Leiden. Since 1994 he has managed the European projects
of the Instituut voor Publiek en Politiek, the Dutch Centre for Civic
Education, in Amsterdam. At present his activities concentrate on ‘European
citizenship’, the promotion of citizen participation in the European integration
process, and civic and political education projects which support institutions
in countries evolving towards democracy. One of the co-ordinators of POLITEIA,
Network for Citizenship and Democracy in Europe.
Ms Rosario Caraballo Román (b 1970)
University Degree in Sciences of Education, Pedagogy at University of
Sevilla. Doctorate studies (35 credits) in Program "The Education into
the European Framework" at University of Sevilla. Currently working in
the Training School for Teachers of Primary, below to University of Sevilla.
In 1995 and 1996 worked in a Training school for workers.
Ms Britten Månsson-Wallin (b 1951, Stockholm Sweden)
B.Sc. in Social Science Education. Since 1994 Dir. Swedish National Council
of Adult Education. Member in the Swedish Monitoring Committee of EU Objective
4. Member in The Swedish EU Programme Office Advisory Board for Competence
Development. Before 1994 started and established the Swedish Sport Confederation
Adult Educational Association-Deputy Director.
Mr Herman Baert (b 1946)
Doctor in educational sciences and professor "sociale pedagogiek"
(adult continuing and community education) at the Katholieke Universiteit
Leuven. Research and teaching is focused on concepts and policy of lifelong
learning, professional development and continuing education, social integration
and community education. Some current projects are: Regional and Demand
Based Planning of Adult Education Offerings (1996-98), Blueprint for a
coherent and dynamic adult education policy in Flanders (1998-2000)
and Guidance and self-directness in project based learning groups
(1999-2001). General co-ordinator of the SOCRATES-ERASMUS intensive programme
Adult Education in Europe.
Ms Bernadette (Bernie) Brady
(b 1950)
Primary degree in Geography and Social Anthropology
and a Masters Degree in Education. Director of AONTAS the National Association
of Adult Education of the Republic of Ireland. Directed a large literacy
scheme in Dublin before AONTAS. For fifteen years have been delivering
a Basic Education Module to Postgraduate students studying adult education
in N.U.I. maynooth. Written many articles and given many presentations
both nationally and internationally on many aspects of adult education.
Just completed a three year term as a Board member of the Combat Poverty
Agency Ireland and am currently a member of the Governing Authority of
University College Dublin.
Mr Barry J. Hake (b 1943)
Born in United Kingdom, resident in Netherlands since 1970. Studied Social
Sciences in UK, and was a teacher of adults. Ph.D. in Adult Education
devoted to social movements and history of adult education. Currently
Associate Professor of Comparative Adult and Corporate Learning, Leiden
University. Specialist research interests in comparative adult education,
European Union policies on lifelong learning, history of cross-cultural
influences in European adult education, especially folk high schools.
Secretary of the European Society for Research on the Education of Adults.
Ms Zina Bianca
Degree in Philosophy at the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy of Catania.
Headmistress in Secondary Institute of First grade since 1982. Specialised
in Education Systems for the Formation and Integration of the Disabled.
Promoter and a president of the AIDEA Sicilia and AIDEA Catania (Italian
Association of Adult Education). Currently the co-ordinator of Integrated

Ms Prue Pullen (b 1945)
BA (Hons) and has Diploma/MSc in Community Education. Currently Co-ordinator,
Edinburgh University Settlement and Leader of Socrates "ARKS" project.
Has developed and run a 2nd Chance to Learn project over 14
years enabling adults who have left school with limited educational attainment
to receive an effective and appropriate education.
Ms Marika Kaasik (b 1967)
Degree from University of Tartu (Department of History). Currently Deputy
of Adult Gymnasium of Tartu. Since 1994 history teacher in Adult Gymnasium
of Tartu. Since 1994 she has been practising continuous self improvement
in the field of adult education in Estonia, Denmark and Sweden.
Mr Jan-Kåre Breivik (b 1962)
Social Anthropologist at University of Oslo. 1983 - 1990 Different University
subjects: Nordic languages and literature, general Social Science, and
different work experiences; teacher, leadership in asylum camp for refugees,
etc. Graduate student in Social Anthropology at the University of Oslo
1994. Project Manager in ADA (Association for Adapted Adult Education
in Norway) 1995 - 1999. Main project: Project manager of a Socrates funded
Adult Education Project: A Second Chance for Disabled Adults . 1996 -
2000 Research project: Stigma and identity management. Working title of
the coming doctoral thesis in social anthropology: Deaf Identity in the
Making - narrative structuring of identity among Deaf Norwegians.
Ms Carmen Stadelhofer
Academic Director of ZAWiW, Centre for General Scientific Continuing
Education at the University of Ulm. Studied Germanistics, Romanic languages
and literature and pedagogy. Since 1984 working at the University of Ulm,
first at the Seminar for Pedagogy. 1987-1994 head of scientific supervision
of the research project "Frauenakademie (Women's Academy). Research focus:
general scientific continuing education for women and people in the third
age with a special attention to innovative methods in adult education.
Heading research projects in the way of action research on a regional,
national and international level.
Mr Jorma K. Miettinen (b 1921 Helsinki, Finland)
Academician Jorma K. Miettinen took in 1939 baccalaureate, entered Helsinki
University, but volunteered to Army when the Winter War broke out In 1940-44
served in military service participating in three wars and rising to the
rank of Senior Lieutenant. Later, in reserve, rose to the rank of Major.
Graduated with M.Sc. (organic chemistry) in 1948 and Pb.D. (biochemistry)
in 1954. In 1964 became Professor of Radiochemistry serving as
Director of Department of Radiochemistry until retirement, in 1987. After
retirement he has served as Board member and Chairman of the Board of
the Third Age University of Helsinki University. Became Academician in
1995. Past President of Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and member
of several other scientific academies.
Mr Heikki Kalervo Väänänen (b 1952)
Professor of Cell Biology since 1998 at University of Turku.
Mr Peter Jarvis
Professor of Continuing Education at the University of Surrey Guildford,
Surrey, UK and, currently, chair of the Centre for Research in Lifelong
Learning in the School. He is Adjunct Professor, Dept. of Adult
Education, University of Georgia, USA. Holds the following academic
qualifications including a Ph.D. - research in sociology of professions
(Aston); D.Litt - Doctor of Letters (Surrey), and a D.Phil. (Honoris Causa)
from the University of Helsinki. He has received a variety of academic
honours. He has written and edited over twenty books and about
150 papers and chapters in books on different fields of education. Serves
on editorial boards of a number of journals in different parts of the
world.
