THE JOY OF LEARNING - THE SECOND ADULT LEARNERīS WEEK IN FINLAND 18. - 24.9.1999

The Adult Learner's Week is a nation-wide campaign promoting adult learning and lifelong learning. The Adult Learner's Week is arranged in accordance with the Hamburg Declaration, the outcome of UNESCO World Conference on Adult Education in Hamburg in 1997. In 1998, Finland was the first country to arrange the Adult Learner's Week. The organiser of the Adult Learner's Week this year is The Finnish Association of Adult Education Centres, (KTOL), an umbrella organisation for the adult education centres in Finland.

The first Adult Learner's Week in Finland was arranged in 1998; the campaign of 1999 is realised using wider back-up forces than the year before. The nation-wide campaign supports and helps to gain publicity for various programmes, the goals of which have been set independently within the institutions, libraries, municipalities and provinces.

The campaign's purpose is to gain more visibility for lifelong learning. The campaign gives information and guidance about modern ways of studying. The aim is to reach new people and underline the importance of studying as a way to maintain working ability. Arranging the Adult Learner's Week promotes the appreciation of adult learning and the adult education institutions. In 1999, the Adult Learner's Week focuses on providing information of various ways and possibilities for learning, and on the fact that every individual has a personal, unique way of learning.

Participants of the Lifelong Learning, Liberal Adult Education and Civil Society conference are invited to join the events of the Adult Learner's Week in Turku area alongside the programme of the actual conference.

The Adult Learner's Week campaign starts on Saturday, 18 September 1999 at 3.00 p.m. in Turku. "The Kick-off and National Learning Festival" takes place at the VPK House (address Eskelinkatu 5). The adult education institutions in South-Western Finland present themselves by means of exhibitions and non-stop performances. Multilingual exhibition guides are provided.

There will also be University lectures on issues such as the expansion of EU, entrepreneurship, the Nordic Dimension and the introduction of the euro. In addition to the actual programme, the organisers provide various leisure activities, e.g. dance courses. The national adult learning awards will also be presented at the festival.
