ALW Introduction

THE JOY OF LEARNING - THE SECOND ADULT LEARNERīS WEEK IN FINLAND 18. - 24.9.1999

Adult Learner's Week is a nation-wide campaign promoting adult learning and lifelong learning.

The impulse to arrange the week came in 1997 when the UNESCO World Conference of Adult Education gave its recommendation that the campaign is arranged in all member countries of the UN.The first Adult Learner's Week 1998 was an effort of co-operation. This is the case also in the campaign of 1999, which is planned by even wider back-up forces The nation-wide campaign will give support and publicity, but the goals can be reached only within the institutions, libraries, municipalities and provinces. The local activity is the nucleus of the campaign.

WITH THE HELP OF THE CAMPAIGN

  • we will make the idea of the lifelong learning known

  • we will give information and guidance about modern ways of studying and studying possibilities

  • we will reach new people and inspire and coach them to study

  • we will underline the importance of studying as a way to maintain the working ability

  • we will increase the appreciation of adult learning and the adult education institutions

  • by means of local activities we will market our own institution and the whole field of adult education

In 1999 we will underline

  • The many ways and possibilities of learning, and the fact that everyone has got his or her own individual way of learning

  • The impossible possibilities of the brain

  • The skills for the information society

  • The joy and passion of hobbies as a way to enrich ones life
