Finnish Adult Education Association


Finnish Adult Education Association is an umbrella organisation for national non-formal adult education associations in Finland. It is a non-governmental organisation founded in 1969. FAEA´s main responsibilities are promoting non-formal adult education and learning, promoting the research on non-formal adult education, and international co-operation.

Promoting Non-formal Adult Education and Learning

FAEA promotes non-formal education in Finland by negotiations, initiatives and development work. The goal of the association is to secure learning opportunities for adults and economical resources for non-formal adult education institutes. FAEA is actively engaged in discussion with the ministry of education on the future development of adult education and training. FAEA supports the role of adult education in strengthening participatory democracy, preventing social exclusion and encouraging active citizenship.

Promoting the research on non-formal adult education

FAEA co-operates with three Finnish universities in strenghtening and increasing the research on non-formal adult education. The co-operational program is called Freedom and Responsibility in Liberal Adult Education. See the website.

International Co-operation

FAEA is a member of the European Association for the Education of Adults (EAEA), and works through it to better possibilies for life long learning in Europe. The vice chairman of FAEA is a member of EAEA board.

In the Nordic context FAEA co-operates with the Nordic network of adult learning (NVL), and is a member of the network of the Nordic non-formal adult education associations Folkbildning i Norden.
